Frequently asked questions.

What is music therapy?

Music therapy is an allied health profession in which a board-certified music therapist collaborates with a client to work towards their health goals within therapeutic music experiences. Music therapy typically involves an assessment process, goal setting, music therapy treatment sessions, and ongoing evaluation. Music therapists have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in music therapy, a 1040-hr internship, and pass a national board exam.

What are the benefits of music therapy?

Music therapy has social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and spiritual benefits. Each sessions is tailored to your personal health goals. Common benefits include:

  • Emotional exploration & regulation

  • Improved focus & attention

  • Access to music for those marginalized or isolated

  • Creative self-expression

  • Deeper sense of purpose & meaning

  • Motivation to engage in physical movement

  • Social connection & community building

  • Finding joy, playfulness, and fun!

I am not musically inclined. Can I still benefit?

Absolutely! No previous musical experience is necessary to participate in music therapy sessions. Both active (playing) and receptive (listening) methods are used and sessions are tailored to engage with music within your comfort level. Music therapy sessions typically involve user-friendly instruments and music therapists are also trained to teach and adapt instruments.

What will we do in music therapy sessions?

Anything involving music! Music experiences are individualized to each person’s musical interests and preferences and based on their established therapy goals. No active participation is required. Sessions may involve: singing, movement/dancing to music, listening to & talking about music, playing instruments, learning a specific instrument (guitar, piano, violin), writing original songs, recording and performance, and more.

How long are music therapy sessions?

Sessions are typically 60 minutes (50-minute session, 10-minute transition). Longer sessions (90-120 minutes) are available for serial 1:1 bedside music therapy, workshops, or special events. Shorter sessions (30 minutes) are available for facilities or families booking multiple sessions, with a 60 minute minimum per site visit.

How often do we meet?

Weekly sessions are recommended for those seeking therapeutic growth and continuity. Bi-monthly or monthly sessions are also an option for generalized therapeutic goals of connection, support, creative expression, and having fun. One-time events are appropriate for community or corporate wellness programs.
